Honda and General Motors Announce Joint Investment in Fuel Cell Systems

Honda and General Motors (GM) announced on January 30, 2017 that they will invest in a joint venture for fuel-cell technology development and manufacturing known as Fuel Cell System Manufacturing LLC. The two companies will equally split the $85 million investment, and the venture will be operated inside GM’s battery pack assembly plant in Brownstown Township in Michigan.

Since 2013 Honda and GM have been working together to jointly develop hydrogen storage technology to be used in next generation fuel cell systems. In order to reduce costs for both companies, Honda and GM have started this project enabling them to share their considerable intellectual property portfolios in fuel cell research which will allow them to integrate their development teams and further advance R&D. The goal of this venture is to start mass production of fuel cell systems for use in vehicles by 2020.
